Making jewelry is a stress reliever. I started five years ago to fulfill a growing need to be creative and found the creative act also relieves stress.

I've always loved jewelry, but I would be disappointed when a piece I wore all the time lost its luster.  I looked for ways to restore the shine, but with fashion jewelry, there isn't really a good option.

As I began to find my "style," - metal and stone - I became fascinated with the science. I sort of wish I'd paid more attention in science class, but the internet is very helpful.

I learned a lot and it makes me want to learn more. Each stone has a geological and metaphysical history. Metals have unique properties. For most of the pieces I make now, I can tell you the history and geology of the metal and stone.

So I thought I'd do a little writing about jewelry, exploring the components' history and preservation. I'll try to link to pieces on designsbycema.com if you want to read more about the piece you are interested in.

Let's go explore.
